Theory & permit preparation
Build your knowledge before the truck.
Start with CDL permit-test preparation and online, self-paced theory through CDL Compliance Now. Course options include Class A, Class B, Class B-to-A upgrade, and applicable H, P, and S endorsement theory, plus English and traffic-sign study and Texas work-zone material.
For TIA's training path, students complete their applicable theory and permit preparation before TIA schedules behind-the-wheel training. Course requirements vary by CDL goal; online theory completion is separate from hands-on instruction.

SB 1366 · effective September 1, 2026
TDLR says the law requires driver-education and driving-safety courses completed on or after that date to include construction- or maintenance-work-zone information. Its application depends on the course and provider category; check with TDLR about a specific CDL-school program.
Read TDLR's SB 1366 guidance ↗English proficiency for CDL drivers
Federal driver-qualification rules require commercial motor vehicle drivers to meet applicable English-language proficiency requirements, including understanding traffic signs and communicating with officials. All CDL training and student instruction are provided in English only. Students must meet the applicable English-proficiency requirements to qualify and operate.
